Dr Andrew Mayo undertook Orthopaedic training in Queensland. He has completed post-fellowship training in hand, wrist, elbow and shoulder surgery. Dr Mayo grew up in Adelaide before completing his medical qualifications in Sydney at the University of New South Wales. He spent his years as a junior doctor and Orthopaedic trainee in Queensland.
He was awarded a Masters of Engineering in Orthopaedic Research at the Queensland University of Technology. In 2012 he completed his Orthopaedic training becoming a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons.
Dr Mayo then began sub-speciality training completing Fellowships in Upper Limb Surgery at the Royal Brisbane Hospital in 2013 and in Bristol, United Kingdom in 2014. He received speciality training in all aspects of hand, wrist, elbow and shoulder surgery. He then returned to Queensland in late 2014 working as a Staff Specialist Orthopaedic Surgeon at Redcliffe Hospital and the Royal Brisbane and Womens’ Hospital (RBWH).
From mid-2015 to mid-2016 Andrew underwent further sub-specialty training in hand surgery at the Auckland Regional Plastic Reconstructive and Hand Surgery Unit based at Middlemore Hospital, New Zealand. He completed The Australian Hand Surgery Society Post-Fellowship Education and Training in Hand Surgery in February 2017. In 2019, Dr Mayo completed the American Society for Surgery of the Hand (ASSH) International Traveling Fellowship visiting the Mayo Clinic Orthopaedic Surgery (Phoenix, Arizona), Ohio State University Hand and Upper Extremity Center (Columbus, Ohio), CORE Institute (Phoenix, Arizona), University of Michigan (Ann Arbour, Michigan), and the Rothman Institute (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania).
Dr Mayo has been a consultant Upper Limb surgeon at the Royal Brisbane and Womens’ Hospital and the Prince Charles Hospital since mid 2016. He is actively involved in orthopaedic training in both a clinical and research capacity, supervising Orthopaedic Registrars and fellows at the Royal Brisbane and Prince Charles Hospitals. He is currently a director of the Australian Hand Surgery Society’s PFET training program.
Dr Mayo has been in private practice since 2017 and treats private patients at Brisbane Private Hospital and Mater Private Hospital (South Brisbane). He treats elective conditions and also maintains a keen interest in upper limb trauma and keeps urgent appointments available for urgent cases.
Dr Mayo’s practice is focused on conditions of the upper extremity including the hand, wrist, elbow and shoulder. Dr Mayo is happy to treat traumatic injuries of the upper limb, including fractures, tendon, ligament, nerve and vessel including microsurgery.
